Italian renewable developer Enfinity Global has brought its first solar project online under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Microsoft in Italy.

The 33.8MW solar installation is part of a wider collaboration between the two companies, with Enfinity expected to deliver up to 366MW of renewable capacity as part of the PPA.

“This first PPA is part of a larger collaboration for up to 366MW AC, which includes additional renewable energy projects already under construction in Italy,” the company said.

According to the companies, the partnership is intended to support Microsoft’s sustainability goals while creating jobs and investing in local communities. The location of the first project was not disclosed, however, the company said that the projects are slated for development across Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, and Basilicata.

Enfinity Global, founded in 2019, has a portfolio of 39.3GW of renewable energy and storage projects across operational, under-construction, and development stages, with an additional 37GW under negotiation worldwide.

The deal is one of Microsoft's first in the Italian market. It follows a commitment made in October 2024 to invest €4.3 billion ($4.75bn) in expanding its cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) data center infrastructure in Italy.

Microsoft's Italian cloud region is located in Milan. The company first announced plans for an Italian Azure region in Milan back in May 2020, with it launching in 2023.

The company has inked several PPAs across Europe in an effort to decarbonize its operations. In its most recent deal, the hyperscaler signed a 95.7MW PPA with Zelestra for energy generated by two solar projects in Zaragoza, Aragon, in Spain.
