Microsoft has received approval to establish a further 15 data centers in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin.

As reported by CNBC, the Village Board signed off on the proposal yesterday, January 26.

The additional 15 data center buildings will be located on land near Microsoft's existing data center campus that was previously slated to be used for a Foxconn manufacturing site. However, the scale of the Foxconn project did not meet expectations, leaving the village with land it had purchased without a customer. Microsoft will now utilize that stranded property.

Microsoft already owns the land in question. Located east of Interstate 94 and south of State Highway 11, the company wants to construct nine data centers, each measuring nearly 580,000 sq ft (53,884 sqm). Directly north of that area, a second site will have six data centers, each just over 568,000 sq ft (52,770 sqm).

Microsoft has long been developing in Mount Pleasant. It broke ground at 90th Street in 2023. It originally planned to develop 315 acres of land.

The cloud company gained approval for another 1,000-acre expansion earlier that year. Since then, it has been busy buying up the land it needs to make this happen, including a 160-acre parcel it acquired for $43 million in August.

The company revealed in September 2025 that it planned to invest a further $4bn over the next three years on top of the $3.3 billion already spent on "Project Fairwater" in the village.

The existing Fairwater site spans 315 acres and comprises three large buildings with a combined 1.2 million sq ft (111,483 sqm) under roofs. Construction required 46.6 miles (74.9km) of deep foundation piles, 26.5 million pounds of structural steel, 120 miles (193km) of medium-voltage underground cable, and 72.6 miles (116.8km) of mechanical piping.

Earlier this month, the company revealed it had paused construction on the campus while it evaluated the "scope and recent changes in technology and consider how this might impact the design of our facilities."

At the time, a spokesperson said that there was no reason to believe the overall scope or nature of the project would change. This now seems to be revised, with it significantly expanding.

Elsewhere in Wisconsin, Microsoft was previously considering developing a data center in Caledonia, but canceled the project just weeks after announcing it.

Mount Pleasant is located in Racine County, and is approximately 30 miles (48.2km) south of Milwaukee and 60 miles (96.5km) north of Chicago.
