Microsoft has canceled plans for a data center in Caledonia, Wisconsin, just weeks after officially announcing the project.

As reported by local publications, including the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the company has withdrawn the application for "Project Nova" due to community opposition.

Caledonia is located in Racine County, just south of Milwaukee.

In an October 8 statement submitted to MJS, Microsoft said: "Based on the community feedback we heard, we have chosen not to move forward with this site.

"We remain committed to investing in Southeast Wisconsin and look forward to working with the Village of Caledonia and Racine County leaders to identify a site that aligns with community priorities and our long-term development goals."

The board was previously set to vote on the rezoning proposal on October 14.

Village Trustee Fran Martin said of the decision: “I commend Microsoft for listening to the community, and for also addressing the concerns that the community had and that I had about that particular site.”

The company only revealed it was behind the proposal in late September 2025. Planned to span 244 acres west of We Energies’ Oak Creek coal power plant, the proposal was submitted in August and aimed to build three data center buildings and a 15-acre electrical substation.

The project has had backlash since the beginning, with an opposition group – Stop Project Nova – set up to organize local residents unhappy with the proposals. Around 30 people spoke against the project at a September meeting.

While the Caledonia data center campus is no longer, Microsoft continues to develop in Wisconsin. The company said last month that it was investing an additional $4 billion into more data centers in Wisconsin, doubling its footprint in Mount Pleasant.

Currently, Microsoft is close to launching that campus, which is set to span three buildings over some 315 acres and 1.2 million sq ft (111,483 sqm). The second phase of development is set to be completed around 2028.
