Meta has broken ground on its first data center in Oklahoma, starting work on a campus in Tulsa.

The project is expected to see $1 billion in investment, and has seen the company confirm it is behind the 340-acre Project Anthem data center project, according to a report from News On 6.

Project Anthem has been in the works since March 2024, though at the time, the end user was unconfirmed. It is set for a 340-acre parcel at the intersection of 11th Street and the west side of the Creek Turnpike.

At the time of proposing the data center, an estimated $800m was set to be invested, with construction expected to take three years. Currently, it is slated to be finished in 2028.

According to Meta, the data center will be optimized for AI workloads, and is its 28th facility in the US and 32nd data center globally.

The company estimates it will need more than 1,000 construction workers at the peak of works, and once complete, will generate around 100 operational jobs. The social media company will also invest $5m in local infrastructure improvements.

The facility will use a closed-loop liquid cooling system, and aims to use zero water for the majority of the year. The company will also cover the full costs of water and wastewater services required. Similarly, all energy costs will be covered by Meta, and the company anticipates spending " hundreds of millions of dollars on grid infrastructure, like substations and transmission lines," while the data center's electricity use will be matched with 100 percent clean energy.

In total, Meta will add 1.5GW of clean energy to the grid in Oklahoma.

Another data center project near Tulsa, Oklahoma, broke ground in late 2025. Being developed by Beale Infrastructure, that campus will occupy 506 acres in Owasso, a city northeast of Tulsa.

Neither Tulsa, nor Oklahoma more generally, has a major data center ecosystem.

Google operates a data center campus to the east of Tulsa in Pryor, Mayes County. Announced in 2007, it launched a facility there back in 2011 and has expanded at regular intervals since.

TierPoint operates several data centers in Tulsa. Last year, Tonaquint acquired an EdgeX data center in Oklahoma City.
