Japanese battery energy storage system (BESS) developer PowerX and data center operator Highreso are set to collaborate, as per a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) announced this week.

The MoU sets out two areas of collaboration: the potential deployment of BESS at Highreso’s data centers and a collaborative effort to grow Highreso’s existing GPU data center business.

Highreso offers a GPU cloud service called GPUSOROBAN, which is powered by five data centers in Ishikawa, Kagawa, and Saga Prefectures.

The pair said that they would cooperate in “sales and marketing, joint development of projects and candidate sites, and partnerships with infrastructure investors and financial institutions.”

Memoranda of Understanding are preliminary and non-binding.

PowerX is a large-scale developer of BESS within the Japanese market. The company has been trying to tailor its product for data centers: in February, the firm partnered with IIJ to explore the development of containerized data centers integrated with BESS, and in May, it unveiled a rack-mounted BESS designed for data centers, with availability targeted for 2027.

Back in March 2025, Highreso signed a partnership with Japanese AI developer alt Inc. to launch a GPU cloud offering, but the latter filed for bankruptcy and was delisted from the Japanese stock exchange in July 2025 following accusations of fraudulent sales.
