A telecoms technician was tied to a cell tower in India as villagers protested against poor mobile service.
The incident happened in the Uttar Pradesh district last Thursday (September 10) after villagers snapped over alleged poor mobile signal in the area.
As reported by Times of India, villagers staged a protest against the lack of 5G connectivity by tying the technician, identified as Aditya Bhan Singh, to the tower in Hardauli.
In a video shared by Al Jazeera, it's reported that Singh was working on behalf of Reliance Jio.
The incident, which was recorded by bystanders, details the grievances of the villagers, who stated that the village has been without 5G service for the past two years.
Singh had been working at the telecoms tower when a group of residents surrounded him, before allegedly taking him hostage. In the translated video captions, the residents were planning to keep him restrained until his "superiors" arrived.
Following the circulation of the video online, the police became aware and subsequently launched an investigation into the incident.
The Times of India has reported that five residents were taken into custody over the incident, while the authorities continue to further examine the situation and the events that occurred last week.
