Infinivan, a Filipino subsidiary of Japanese telco IPS, is reportedly acquiring a cable landing station (CLS) on the northwest coast of the Philippines.

The Manila Standards reports that Infinivan is investing $15 million to acquire a cable landing station in La Union from a government-owned and controlled corporation.

La Union is a coastal province in the Philippines situated in the Ilocos Region on the island of Luzon. It is some 250km (160 miles) north of the capital city, Manila.

The state-owned firm Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) operates a cable landing station in San Fernando City that hosts the Pacific Light Cable Network (PLCN) system.

Infinivan jointly operates the Philippines Domestic Submarine Cable Network (PDSCN), which connects the archipelago nation’s various islands.

Last year, the company announced a partnership with BCDA aimed at “maximizing the use of BCDA’s existing facilities.”

The deal was focused on BCDA’s Luzon Bypass Infrastructure, consisting of two landing stations in San Fernando, La Union, and Baler, Aurora, as well as a 240-km fiber conduit network connecting the two.

Last year, the company broke ground on a CLS expansion project in Baler, on the east side of Luzon Island. It also began operating a CLS for the PDSCN in Surigao, a northern city on the island of Mindanao.

The telco has a consumer network business in the Philippines. IPS, the Japanese parent company, also provides telco services internationally and in its domestic market of Japan.

The Asia-America Gateway (AAG) Cable System, a consortium system from 2009 linking the US to the Philippines and Southeast Asia, lands in La Union.

The upcoming SEA-H2X system, linking Hong Kong to Singapore via the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia, also lands in La Union. The cable is due to enter operation this year and lands in Converge’s CLS in Bauang.

Philippines Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) operates a separate CLS in Bauang, completed in 2009 for the AAG (Asia-American Gateway) cable.

The upcoming Asia Link Cable (ALC) is set to land in Bauang and Luna next year, while the Asia United Gateway East (AUG East) system is also set to land in Luna in 2029.

IPS and Infinivan are part of the upcoming Candle system alongside Meta. The project will link Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Japan. It is set to land in Baler.
