Investment firm Harrison Street and data center company fifteenfortyseven Critical Systems Realty (1547) have acquired a data center in Hawaii.
The companies this week announced the acquisition of AlohaNAP, a carrier hotel data center located on the island of O‘ahu in Hawaii.
Terms of the deal were not shared. 1547 previously operated the site in a joint venture with Hawaii Pacific Teleport (HPT).
"AlohaNAP is a crucial hub for international data transmission, connecting major global markets and serving as a key Edge node for trans-Pacific connectivity within Hawaii's rapidly expanding Edge computing market,” said Michael Borchetta, managing director in transactions at Harrison Street. “Acquiring AlohaNAP strengthens our connectivity-centric data center platform, adding valuable scale and diversity across our multi-site carrier hotel portfolio. Alongside our partners at 1547, we are excited to leverage AlohaNAP's unique submarine cable and satellite access and continue to add further capacity to meet the needs of the world’s largest hyperscale tenants.”
Harrison Street and 1547 said they will immediately begin the Phase 1 expansion of AlohaNAP’s existing capacity by developing the current parking lot and adjacent area into an additional 10,300 sq ft (956 sqm), 1.5 MW data center designed for an additional ~200 cabinets. After completion, the facility will total 22,800 sq ft (2,120 sqm) and 2.7 MW of total capacity.
After that, the companies aim to transform the site into a multi-building data center campus. 1547’s site suggests a second building could add a further 50,000 sq ft (4,645 sqm).
“We are excited to partner with Harrison Street on the expansion of AlohaNAP, a facility that embodies our joint commitment to connectivity,” said J. Todd Raymond, CEO and managing director at 1547. “Since 2012, we have been developing AlohaNAP as a gateway between the US and the APAC region and making it an invaluable asset in the global data ecosystem. As the demand for data transmission and Edge computing continues to surge, we remain focused on delivering solutions that strengthen trans-Pacific communication and empower our customers to thrive in a digital-first world. The partnership with Harrison Street and AlohaNAP’s expansion will further enhance our ability to meet the region’s growing need for low-latency, high-redundancy connectivity.”
1547 has been involved with AlohaNAP since its inception and offers space at the site it lists as HAII1. The company partnered with HPT to develop what was originally known as Hawaii Pacific Data next to HPT’s teleport site back in 2013. Located at 91-340 Farrington Hwy in Kapolei, the data center launched in 2015.
The facility is a former GTE/Verizon central office. The companies initially aimed to redevelop an existing 10,800 sq ft hardened telecom facility to provide capacity for 200 racks, with plans to expand further in the future. Founded in 1998, HPT was acquired by engineering firm Calian last year.
1547 has data centers in New York, Oregon, Indiana, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Texas, and Illinois. Harrison Street has previously partnered with 1547 to acquire the Pittock Block carrier hotel in Portland, Oregon; the Chase Tower carrier hotel in McAllen, Texas; and the Wells Building carrier hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Harrison Street also acquired CIM Group’s stake in four US data centers co-owned with 1547. Earlier this year the two companies acquired a carrier hotel data center in South Bend, Indiana.
