T-Mobile is in the running to buy Uniti Group's fiber assets, according to reports.

TMT Finance reported earlier this week that the US telco is considering buying all, or parts of Uniti Group. Private equity firm TPG is also said to be interested in the assets.

Following the speculation, Uniti's stock grew from about $8 per share on Monday to more than $10 yesterday, as reported by Fierce Wireless.

T-Mobile is looking to grow out its fiber footprint across the US, following high profile acquisitions of Lumos and Metronet last year.

The carrier is interested in adding Uniti's Kinetic fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) business, while TPG wants Uniti’s enterprise fiber business, notes the TMT Finance report. T-Mobile and TPG could potentially partner to buy the entire company.

Uniti notably completed its merger with Windstream's Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) business last year. Uniti is a real estate investment trust based in Little Rock, Arkansas, and owns fiber and wireless towers, with around 138,000 fiber route miles, and 8.3 million fiber strand miles.

T-Mobile said it will reach 12 to 15 million households with fiber by the end of 2030 as the carrier seeks to carve out more fiber M&A deals. By the end of the decade, the carrier expects to hit between 3-4 million fiber subscribers.
