Green Mountain has begun expansion work at its campus in London, UK.
The company this week announced construction work for a new 14MW facility at the company’s LON1-East campus in Romford.
The expansion will be built over two phases (each phase totaling 7MW and across three data halls), inside the existing building and will offer more than 5,500 sqm (59,200 sq ft) of white space once both phases are complete.
The first phase is set to be completed by Q1 2025. The company said the campus has the potential to be expanded with an additional 16MW in the future.
“This is a true milestone in our international expansion. London is an extremely important data center hub and a must-have location for many international companies. Our aim is to gradually expand our footprint in several international markets. London is an ideal location to continue executing this strategy,” said Atle Hagaseth, CEO of Green Mountain.
The site uses chilled water cooling with centralized adiabatic coolers and water-cooled chillers, has a target annualized PUE of 1.2, and the backup power generators will use HVO fuel instead of diesel.
Green Mountain – owned by Israeli real estate firm Azrieli Group since 2021 – acquired Infinity SDC and took over the site in the summer of 2022. The deal closed in January 2023.
“We are delighted to begin expanding the existing operational site to bring additional capacity to market,” added Simon Blackburn, Green Mountain’s managing director, UK. “The unique location coupled with a strong team experienced in both building and operating highly secure data centers with 100 percent availability, makes this a fantastic site for customers looking for low latency connectivity, and easy access to London and with an opportunity to expand to 30MW including build to suit options in a single campus.”
The Romford facility was Infinity’s last data center, and the acquisition marked the end of the company which had been slowly selling off its portfolio for a number of years. Back in 2015, it sold its Slough data center to Virtus; two years later its Stockley Park facility was acquired by Zenium; and in 2018 it sold land in Stratford to the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Founded in 2009, Green Mountain currently operates three sites across Norway in Oslo, Rjukan, and Rennesøy. Further campuses are planned in Gismarvik, Kalberg, Undheim, and Hønefoss where the company has signed a 90MW hosting deal with TikTok. While it primarily operates in Norway, the company recently announced plans for a new campus outside Frankfurt in Germany.
Azrieli Group acquired the company from Norwegian real estate firm Smedvig for $850 million in 2021.
