Waste heat from gas turbine-powered AI data centers could be turned into purified water, according to a newly-launched company, Gneuton.

Gneuton, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has developed a technology that utilizes excess heat from gas turbines through thermal distillation, eliminating the need for external energy sources and reducing CO2 emissions associated with traditional water treatment methods.

Additionally, the company claims that the system is scalable and engineered for integration within large-scale AI data centers, with the potential to produce millions of gallons of purified water annually per installation.

According to Gneuton, the solution is a closed-loop system and can harness the untapped thermal energy from gas turbines to drive a distillation process, producing purified water without additional energy input. It can utilize varying forms of wastewater, including raw water as well as oilfield wastewater.

We believe the future of AI must be regenerative, not extractive. The company stated that it intends to partner with leading energy and technology firms and aims to deploy its first commercial pilots within the next six months, targeting major AI hubs in North America, Europe, and Asia.

This technology is ready to deploy at scale, helping hyperscale data centers meet their sustainability goals while contributing to global water security," said Martineau.

As of September 2025, no public information has been released regarding the company's funding.
