German data center firm Envia Tel is expanding its data center in Leipzig.
The regional telecommunications service provider this week announced it is expanding the capacity in the Leipzig 2 data center and is starting with the expansion of the third and fourth construction phases.
The company will be building a 1,000 sqm (10,765 sq ft) area able to host up to 20,000 additional servers. Commissioning and the move-in of the first customers are planned for the summer of 2025.
The first two construction phases, also covering a total area of 1,000 square meters, have already been fully marketed. Launched in 2020, in total the data center will offer space for around 40,000 servers across 2,000 sqm (21,530 sq ft).
"Highly available, secure, and scalable IT infrastructures are the basis for digital transformation. This is what the Leipzig 2 data center stands for. It grows as companies need data center capacity. Thanks to the regional proximity and the establishment of the DE-CIX Leipzig internet node, we are also strengthening the competitiveness of companies and the Central Germany region," said Stephan Drescher, Envia TEL managing director.
The company aims to reuse the waste heat and provide it to the city of Taucha.
A subsidiary of German energy firm EnviaM Group, Envia Tel operates two data centers – Leipzig 1 and 2 – at its Leipzig campus, with a total area of 3,000 sqm (32,290 sq ft) and space for around 60,000 servers. The company also operates around 7,000km of fiber across the country.
Last year EnviaM announced it was partnering with engineering firm Avacon Group to develop a 2,000 sqm data center in the Sehnde-Ost industrial area of Hanover.
