A data center in Singapore has caused issues with Alibaba's cloud services.
The company said a fire incident occurred in Availability Zone C of its Singapore region. Update: Coverage of day two of the fire here.
"At 10:20 on September 10, 2024 Beijing time, Alibaba Cloud monitoring detected network access anomalies in availability zone C of the Singapore region, causing some cloud services to function abnormally," Alibaba Cloud said in a status update. "The issue has occurred due to a fire incident in the Singapore data center, resulting in elevated temperatures, firefighters have arrived on site to handle the situation."
The most recent update, from 20:04 local time, said that though "under control," the issue has not been completely eliminated.
"Due to fire safety control, operation, and maintenance engineers are unable to enter the building in which the data center is located, and the risk of continuously rising temperature in the data center cannot be eliminated for the time being," the company said.
It continued: "Currently, some network equipment in the data center has experienced abnormalities in high-temperature environments, affecting the network connectivity of some cloud products. If the subsequent temperature rise is not effectively controlled, the possibility of a complete network outage in Availability Zone C of Singapore will increase. If your business is deployed in Availability Zone C of Singapore, we will assist you in migrating your business as soon as possible."
Alibaba didn't provide details, but local reports suggest the affected data center was Digital Realty's SIN11 facility.
Digital Realty is yet to comment on the incident and there's no information on the company's status page. DCD has reached out for more information.
Update: A spokesperson for Digital told us: "We became aware of a fire alarm being triggered at our SIN11 data center at 7.45am on September 10, 2024. Our response protocol was deployed as soon as the fire alarm was triggered. All on-site personnel were safely evacuated by 8.15am and no injuries are reported."
"We swiftly notified and advised impacted customers to activate their business continuity plans. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to the incident and is working to secure the premises and stabilize the situation."
SIN11 Digital Loyang 1, located at 3 Loyang Way, launched in 2016 and totals 17,000 sqm (183,000 sq ft) across four stories.
Companies including Lazada and ByteDance have reportedly seen disruption as a result of the incident.
