Bitcoin mining firm Compass Mining has launched an off-grid natural gas-powered site in Wyoming, in partnership with 360 Energy, a Texas-based mobile natural gas provider.

The module is already operational, and the company expects it to be fully energized by the end of September. The site has a total power capacity of 3.3MW and, according to Compass, is comprised of earlier-generation hardware, such as the Antminer S19-series machines. The redeployment of these older assets, Compass said, was done to extend their lifecycle and turn them into productive and profitable assets.

"The future of Bitcoin mining is about turning abundant underutilized energy into productive infrastructure," said Karoon Mackenchery, senior director of Mining Services at Compass Mining.

"We believe 360 Energy has solved many of the challenges of off-grid Bitcoin mining. By testing these new models and new markets, we are preparing to extend these innovations to additional sites and increase our offering to institutional clients."

As part of the agreement, 360 Energy will supply Compass with natural gas offtake using its Apex gas offtake system, which captures stranded, flared, or uneconomic natural gas and converts it into power from computing.

"We are seeing more producers utilize Bitcoin mining as a natural gas offtake," said Chris Alfano, 360 Energy. "By combining our innovative solutions with Compass Mining's years of operational excellence, we are proving how Bitcoin mining can directly benefit oil and gas companies with less emissions, increased oil production, and new uncorrelated revenue streams."

Compass operates Bitcoin mining operations across more than 20 sites in the US, including Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, Nebraska, Texas, North Dakota, and Wyoming, as well as in Manitoba and Ontario, Canada. The company states that its total capacity exceeds 160MW.

The miner has energized several sites in 2025. Earlier this month, the firm energized a new 7.5MW site in Minnesota.

Before this, in August, in partnership with Onmine, it announced the full energization of a 10MW cryptomine data center facility in Texas.

In July, Compass Mining energized a 4.5MW site in Iowa in collaboration with DIGTB, an industrial developer and manager of real estate assets with energy infrastructure.

In June, Compass expanded its own hosting contract with Soluna by 8MW at Soluna’s Dorothy 1 and Dorothy 2 sites in Texas.

According to its website, 360 Energy has deployed 14 of its containerized IFC/Apex Gas Offtake units to date. After first deploying at its own wells in 2021, the company says it has partnered with several companies for deployments in Texas, including Norwood Energy and Barnett Shale.

Last month, the company announced a partnership with Union Jack Oil to develop a Bitcoin mining site in West Newton, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
