Data center provider CloudHQ has formed a joint venture with real asset manager ESR Group for the Cosmosqure data center project in Osaka, Japan.
CloudHQ has now joined the project, which began construction in 2022 after ESR bought the building in April 2021.
Located in Nanko Kita, 10km (6.2 miles) from Osaka’s central business district, the campus will see an investment of $2 billion to deliver a planned capacity of 130MW.
The project comprises three buildings, OS1, OS2, and OS3, which will be delivered in three phases.
ESR completed the core and shell of OS1 in August last year. The first facility will provide 25MW of capacity and is expected to be ready for service in June this year.
Further specifications and timelines were not provided.
“ESR Cosmosquare is a flagship project for ESR, and we are delighted to be working with CloudHQ to tap the immense data center growth opportunities that exist in Japan. ESR has one of the largest real estate development teams in APAC, which enables us to leverage local market supply chain solutions and partnerships to deliver data centers on spec, on time, and on budget for the benefit of our data center partners,” said Stuart Gibson, ESR Group co-founder and co-CEO.
Hossein Fateh, founder and CEO of CloudHQ, added: “We are excited to partner with ESR on this groundbreaking venture in Japan. The Cosmosquare Data Centre campus represents a significant step forward in our mission to deliver state-of-the-art data center solutions globally. ESR’s deep local real estate knowledge combined with CloudHQ’s engineering expertise will make this a powerful partnership going forward.”
CloudHQ has 56 data centers, either operational or in development, totaling around 1,100MW of capacity across the US, EMEA, and APAC regions.
ESR’s other data center developments include campuses in Keihana and Minoh City, as well as Ariake, Tokyo. Across the APAC region, the group has data center assets in Hong Kong, Mumbai, and Seoul.
The real estate giant could be taken private in a $7.11 billion deal, as announced at the end of last year. The company was formed in 2016 following a merger between e-shang and Redwood Group.
Currently, Digital Realty, NTT, Digital Edge, CyrusOne, Colt, AirTrunk, Stack, Telehouse, and Equinix have a presence in the Osaka region.
