Data center operator Chindata and Chinese tech conglomerate HEC Group have broken ground on a 7.5MW data center in Hubei Province, China.

Chindata announced on, Friday April 3, that construction on the site had begun. The campus, which spans 6.3 hectares, will include the data center and an “AI showcase and academic exchange center.”

It will be built near Qinglin Temple, Gaobazhou Town, in Yidu, a city located in southern Hubei.

Hubei is located in central China.

Details about the facility's estimated completion date are sparse.

Chindata was previously owned by Bain Capital, the private equity firm founded by Mitt Romney.

But Bain decided to sell its equity interest in Chindata to HEC back in September 2025. The acquisition was completed this January.

Hubei is also home to the Dongyuemiao data center project, developed by Chinese energy company Three Gorges Group. As suggested by the name, the data center is located on the right bank of the Three Gorges Dam, a hydroelectric dam that is the world’s largest power station by installed capacity.

Chinese operator Centrin Data also operates facilities in Wuhan, the province’s capital.

Chindata operates data centers in the Greater Beijing Area, the Greater Bay Area, Zhejiang province, Gansu province, Ningxia province, and is looking to build a facility in Inner Mongolia, according to the company’s website.
