Beacon AI Centers and VoltaGrid may build a data center in the City of Saint John, Canada.

Saint John is a city in the eastern Canadian province of New Brunswick. It borders the American state of Maine.

The facility would be located on a 120-hectare land parcel in the newly expanded Spruce Lake Industrial Park, situated in the small coastal village of Lorneville.

CBC reports that VoltaGrid would assemble an on-site, 190MW natural gas-fired power generator.

In July, the local council approved a rezoning proposal that would add an additional 645 hectares for the Park. At the time, the City stated that a letter of intent had been submitted to build a data center without identifying the operator.

It is unclear whether Beacon and VoltaGrid have formally filed an application with the City for planning approval. The pair are set to host a public session for the data center on November 5.

Investment firm Nadia Partners quietly launched Beacon AI Centers (also known as Beacon Data Centers) in March 2023. Targeting 2027 launch dates, most of the company's gigawatt-scale portfolio is located in Alberta, with data center projects near Chestermere, High River, Acheson, Sturgeon County, Langdon, and Beaumont.

VoltaGrid is a Texas-based energy management and microgrid power generation firm. Just last week, the company signed a partnership with US oil services company Halliburton to develop and deploy distributed power generation systems for the global data center sector, and earlier in October, it agreed to supply Oracle with 2.3GW of capacity.

Traditionally, New Brunswick has not been a data center hub. A DC Byte report on the country indicates that most of its IT load is clustered around the cities of Toronto and Montreal and the province of Alberta.
