Australian real estate firm Goodman has broken ground on a new data center in Sydney.
The company this week announced the commencement of construction on its SYD01 data center in Artarmon, northern Sydney.
Set on 1.4 hectares, the first 12.2MW phase is due to be ready for service in Q2 2028. The facility will total 61MW of IT capacity via a 90MW utility feed.
Jason Little, CEO Australia, Goodman, said: “SYD01 demonstrates how Goodman’s global data center capability is being deployed in Australia to support the accelerating demand for AI and cloud services. Our ability to secure land, power, and connectivity in Tier 1 markets, combined with more than 20 years of global experience in data centers, enables us to deliver infrastructure of this scale, speed, and reliability.”
The SYD01 site is likely the former ABC television studios in Artarmon that Goodman acquired in 2022. The company filed to turn it into a data center development in 2024.
The facility is part of Goodman’s 1.3GW Australian power bank, where it currently has seven stabilized data centers supporting hyperscale and enterprise customers.
Globally, Goodman said it has a 6GW power bank across 16 metropolitan cities. This includes 700MW of stabilized assets delivered and 400MW in development in supply-constrained markets. The company is currently working on LAX01 Vernon in Los Angeles, HK10 in Hong Kong, and AMS01 in Amsterdam.
Traditionally focused on logistics and industrial real estate, Goodman has data center projects in operation or development across Hong Kong, Australia, Germany, the US, France, and Japan.
Goodman is developing multiple data centers across Sydney. The company is planning a 126MW facility in Guildford West on a former Castrol site, and is also redeveloping a former Eaton warehouse site in Mascot into a 90MW facility, planning another 90MW site in Macquarie Park, and converting a warehouse site in Cove West into a 90MW campus.
Earlier this year, the firm filed to develop a 90MW campus in the Eastern Creek area of the city, replacing a vacant two-story distribution center previously occupied by Australian supermarket chain Coles.
