Vietnamese telco Viettel plans to build 24 data centers in the country by 2030.
According to the company, these data centers will have a combined capacity 560MW, as reported by w.media.
Locations and specific timelines of the data center developments were not shared. DCD has reached out for more information.
In addition, Viettel said that it will lay four new subsea cable routes. The company estimates that this will meet 60 percent of the country's international connectivity demand.
Viettel Group's chairman and general director Tao Duc Thang added that the company is seeking to create a large and advanced digital infrastructure to help "drive nationwide digital transformation."
Among the subsea cable routes planned is the Asia Direct Cable in which Viettel is investing. That subsea cable is due to go live in early 2025.
Viettel currently operates 14 data centers in Vietnam with a combined capacity of 87MW. One of those data centers, located in the Hoa Luc tech park in Hanoi, went live in April 2024. Last month, the company awarded Nokia a contract to support Viettel's 5G rollout in Vietnam.
Earlier this year, Vietnam relaxed its rules regarding foreign investment in data centers in the country. Previously, the country would only enable foreign companies to own up to 49 percent of data center projects. The new regulation dubbed the "Law on Telecommunications" came into effect in July 2024, and enabled international companies to fully own and develop data centers in the country.
