Vantage Data Centers has announced a major expansion into Asia Pacific through two acquisitions.
The company has acquired Agile Data Centers, a data center provider in the Asia-Pacific region developing greenfield hyperscale campuses totaling almost 170MW across facilities in Tokyo, Osaka, and Melbourne.
AgileDC was founded in 2020 by DigitalBridge, and in February 2021 formed a joint venture with Goldman Sachs through its Koguma DC Holding entity.
When fully built out, Vantage's newly acquired 7-acre campus in Tullamarine, Melbourne, will comprise three data centers across 270,000 square feet (25,000 sqm) and 48MW of capacity. The first phase of 8MW is scheduled for completion in early 2023.
In Osaka, the 12-acre campus will house two four-story data centers totaling 40MW. The first 5MW phase is scheduled for completion in Q2 2024. The first phase of the Tokyo campus is also due to complete in Q2 2024 and will see 80MW of capacity across three data centers when fully built out.
At the same time, Vantage will be taking on the data center portfolio of PCCW Ltd. Vantage’s majority shareholder DigitalBridge acquired PCCW Ltd’s data center business in July for $750 million.
The company said the acquired PCCW DC portfolio consists of 100MW of existing and expansion critical IT load across multiple facilities in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.
The portfolio of facilities will become part of Vantage upon the transaction closing, which is expected in the fourth quarter of 2021.
“Following successful expansions throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe over the past three years, we are expanding to Asia Pacific to better serve customers on a global basis. The key to our global expansion has been finding well-aligned partners who bring local expertise, an established footprint, a strong management team, and the ability to scale quickly,” said Sureel Choksi, president and CEO, Vantage Data Centers. “The combination of Agile and PCCW’s data center business does just that, and I’m thrilled to welcome Giles Proctor, Brian Groen, and their highly talented teams to Vantage.”
Giles Proctor, formerly president and co-founder of Agile Data Centers will serve as president of Vantage’s APAC business, while PCCW DC’s senior vice president of data centers, Brian Groen, will join Vantage as senior vice president, APAC.
“As we continue building a global digital infrastructure platform, we recognized a strategic opportunity to combine the market penetration, expertise, and strength of two valuable portfolio companies, Vantage and Agile, with the established foothold of PCCW DC to serve customers in this high growth region,” said Jon Mauck, senior managing director of DigitalBridge Investment Management. “The Vantage team has proven across North America and Europe that it is highly skilled at taking full advantage of both acquisitions and greenfield opportunities to quickly become a leading provider in new markets.”
Vantage said DigitalBridge Investment Management, along with other existing Vantage investors, contributed an additional $1.5 billion in equity capital for the acquisitions.
