The deal comes just weeks after the wider Department of Defense awarded AWS and its primary competitors a $9 billion contract for “enterprise-wide globally available cloud services across all security domains and classification levels, from the strategic level to the tactical Edge."

The Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) project replaced JEDI, a failed effort to award the DoD's cloud needs to a single vendor. But JEDI fell apart amid years of legal fights and claims of presidential interference.

As for the Navy, it awarded a $1 billion contract to Inmarsat this October to provide satellite communications services. Back in 2019, it awarded Dell IT a $231 million contract for data center and cloud infrastructure.
