Industry association 5G Americas has announced it's winding down its operations.

In its announcement yesterday (February 18), 5G Americas, which was initially founded as 3G Americas in 2003, said its board of governors had approved a plan to formally dissolve the organization and wind down operations by February 27, 2026.

No specific reason was given by 5G Americas for the decision.

A host of telecoms and technology companies are members of the association, including AT&T, Cisco, Ericsson, Mavenir Telecom, Nokia, Qualcomm, and Airpsan.

The association has worked with telcos and acted as a voice for the wireless industry across the Americas, pushing for collaboration between carriers and vendors, while pushing the development and adoption of 3G, 4G LTE, 5G, 5G-Advanced, and the evolution toward 6G.

“It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve as president of 5G Americas and to work alongside some of the most dedicated leaders in our industry,” said Viet Nguyen, president of 5G Americas.

“Together, we have helped shape the narrative around 5G and laid important groundwork for 5G-Advanced and 6G. I am deeply proud of the impact this organization has had in advancing innovation, collaboration, and thought leadership across North America and beyond.”

The association has changed its name to reflect the current generation of technology, and was previously 4G Americas before entering the 5G era.

5G Americas said it will "complete its remaining initiatives, conclude ongoing administrative matters" ahead of closing down its operations next week.
