Australian mobile carrier Optus has further expanded its 5G coverage by extending the service to Moree, New South Wales.

According to Optus, the launch of 5G in Moree represents more than 100 locations upgraded across regional New South Wales in the past 12 months.

It means that Optus' 5G coverage now spans 94.5 percent of the population across more than 6,000 sites nationally. The carrier added that it will upgrade an additional 100 sites in NSW by the end of next year.

Optus first launched its 5G mobile network back in 2019, initially in the country's most populous cities.

However, the telco notes that its 5G upgrades have since expanded into regional Australia, where it said it has increased by 82 percent in just 16 months, with 2,444 regional sites expected to be upgraded by 2030.

Moree is the latest example of this, with the town historically known for its agriculture and as a thermal spring town.

"We're continuing to invest in regional Australia because reliable connectivity helps communities thrive, supports economic activity and gives people more flexibility in how they live, work and connect," said Glenn Hamilton, local general manager, Optus.

"The fast-tracked rollout of Optus 5G across regional Australia is great news for communities like Moree. It will deliver better connectivity for residents, businesses and Optus customers visiting the region."
