TikTok has restored its operations following an outage last week.

The social media platform began experiencing issues on January 25 following a power outage at one of its data centers in the US. The company has now confirmed that this was an Oracle data center, and the power outage was related to a snowstorm in the area.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, TikTok's US owner – TikTok USDS JV – revealed on X on February 1 that the platform was now operational.

The company wrote: "We have successfully restored TikTok back to normal after a significant outage caused by winter weather took down a primary US data center site operated by Oracle."

"The winter storm led to a power outage which caused network and storage issues at the site and impacted tens of thousands of servers that help keep TikTok running ... Our teams worked around the clock with Oracle to ensure a safe and full restoration of systems."

The winter storm swept through the US last week, impacting around 20 states according to NOAA, as the harsh weather moved eastward.

TikTok began moving its US data to Oracle data centers in 2022, with it confirmed to be using a data center in Texas. At the time, however, the data was hosted on bare-metal servers rather than in Oracle's cloud platform. A year later, the two companies expanded their agreement under "Project Texas," a $1.5 billion promise to hand control over data to Oracle, with source code overseen by an in-house committee approved by the US government called TikTok U.S. Data Security.

Despite it being known that TikTok uses an Oracle data center in Texas, it has not been stated whether this was the facility impacted.

The Oracle/TikTok partnership has since been formalized through the establishment of the TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, which was finalized last week, enabling continued operations in the country with TikTok hosted on the Oracle cloud platform. Oracle is a 15 percent owner.
