Three of the largest AI chatbots experienced an apparently simultaneous outage today (September 3).

OpenAI’s ChatGPT, SpaceXAI’s Grok, and Anthropic’s Claude all began reporting issues from around 11am ET. ChatGPT's status page noted “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex.”

OpenAI said that it has “applied a mitigation” and is “monitoring recovery." Anthropic’s Claude, Claude Code, and Claude API went down due to an undisclosed “infrastructure issue” that was mostly fixed a little over an hour later. Opus 4.8 and Opus 5 remain impacted.

As for SpaceXAI’s Grok, it said that “this model is overloaded right now. Please try again shortly or pick a different model.”

The company later posted on X that it had suffered "an outage at our Memphis compute center this morning [Thursday, September 3]."

It said: "We’d also like to apologize to our impacted compute partners. All systems have now been restored and are functioning nominally."

Anthropic is a known customer of Elon Musk's SpaceXAI, from whom it rents data center space in Memphis as part of a deal worth a reported $1.25 billion a month. Under the agreement, announced in May, Anthropic leases all the servers at the Colossus 1 data center, which is separate from the other SpaceXAI sites in the area, that are used to run Grok.

OpenAI does not use SpaceXAI infrastructure, and it is not clear whether the degradation of one service led to increased usage of another.

Google’s Gemini remained unaffected.
