A temple in the western Indian state of Gujarat has inaugurated a data center.

As reported by Times of India, the Ambaji temple, located in the city of Junagadh, Banaskantha district, will use the facility in order to streamline the functions of the temple.

This includes registration for individuals on pilgrimages, supporting the distribution of ‘prasad’ - which are religious offerings, enabling donations to the temple, religious item sale centers, service camps, and vehicle passes.

Details about the capacity and size of the facility are unknown, but it is likely to be small. It has not been stated if the data center will be operated by the temple, or if it will be outsourced.

The temple is a Shakti pitha, a term used to describe a shrine or pilgrimage destination dedicated to Shakti, a major deity in Hinduism. According to Gujarat’s tourism website, the annual pilgrimage takes place in the Gujarati month of Bhadarvo, which typically falls between late August and late September. More than one and a half million pilgrims come to visit the temple.

Data centers in Gujarat have been concentrated in Ahmedabad, the state’s most populous city. CtrlS broke ground on a $30 million facility in the state at the end of 2023, and Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani has claimed that he has plans to build the ‘world’s largest’ data center in the coastal city of Jamnagar.
