Telefónica has restored all of its services in Spain this afternoon following a disruption earlier in the day.
An incident on the telco's network due to upgrade work left landline and Internet unavailable for some lines across Spain for several hours earlier today (May 20).
It led to issues for the country's 112 emergency services in almost all autonomous communities, notably in Aragon, Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, La Rioja, Navarre, the Basque Country, and the Valencian Community, reported El Pais.
Landline networks of other carriers such as MasOrange and Vodafone were unaffected.
"All service has been reestablished except for a case or two where teams are working," said Sergio Sanchez, operations director, Telefónica.
The lengthy outage comes less than a month after a mass power outage brought Spain and neighboring Portugal to a standstill.
Today's outage was first reported just after 3:00am, impacting fixed Internet services in particular.
"This morning we experienced an incident that affected the fixed communications services of several companies and public services. From the very beginning, we have been working to restore these services, which have now been fully restored," said the carrier in a statement.
"We have activated the incident management committee, isolated the affected nodes, and deployed field personnel to resolve specific cases arising from this incident, which has now been resolved."
The mass outage across Iberia late last month has been described as the worst in Spain and Portugal's history.
The sudden outage saw the equivalent of 60 percent of demand in Spain drop in five seconds around midday on Monday. Across the Iberian peninsula, factories and refineries shut down, trains halted, fridges warmed up, traffic lights and streetlights stopped working, and a state of emergency was called. Police and Red Cross workers handed out blankets and bottles of water.
