Switch is planning to expand its data center campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Crain’s and others report Switch is close to completing the second building at its Steelcase pyramid campus in Gaines Township and is in the planning process for a third.
After gaining approval in 2021, construction on the first 312,000-square-foot (29,000 sqm) expansion began in 2022. Mlive reports it is due to open in the spring.
The planned second building, which is “a massive investment,” is expected to open early in the second quarter of 2025, John Truscott, CEO of public relations firm Truscott Rossman and representing Switch, told Crain’s.
Construction on a third data center building on site is expected to start “sooner rather than later,” Truscott said, adding that the investment “will be several hundred million” dollars.
Further details on the new building were not shared.
Located in Kent County, the seven-story Pyramid building was used by Steelcase as a corporate design center. It was built for $111 million and opened in 1989; the company reportedly began moving out in 2010. Switch acquired and re-opened the pyramid property in 2017 for a reported $22.2 million, two years after Steelcase sold the property for $4 million.
The first phase of the project delivered more than 225,000 sq ft (20,900 sqm) of white space; the site will eventually offer 1.8 million sq ft (167,225 sqm) of white space and up to 320MW of power capacity, at a cost of approximately $5 billion.
The company announced it would be adding 940,000 sq ft (87,330 sqm) of data center space in late 2017, with plans to begin construction the following year.
Founded in 2000, DigitalBridge-owned Switch operates its large 'Prime' data center campuses in Austin, Texas; Reno, Las Vegas; Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Atlanta, Georgia. Over the last year, it has filed to expand further in Austin and Atlanta.
