An employee of Malaysia’s Sunway Construction is under investigation for alleged corruption in the handling of a data center project.

Sunway Construction Group (SunCon), the construction subsidiary of the Sunway Group conglomerate, disclosed on July 21 to Bursa Malaysia, the country’s stock exchange, that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had initiated an inquiry against a member of staff from the company.

According to the statement, the inquiry is “specifically in relation to engagements with certain subcontractors.”

The statement added: “SunCon has been and continues to be fully cooperative with the MACC to facilitate a thorough investigation. SunCon is also currently seeking legal counsel to evaluate the appropriate actions to be taken on certain sub-contracts and parties.”

It was previously reported (via the Malay Mail) that the project manager of an unnamed construction company was detained after being suspected of receiving bribes from firms interested in working on the data center build. The project was a construction contract for a data center in Johor worth around RM 180m ($42.5m).

The manager would allegedly leak the tender price to an interested company before its official release date, enabling a price for the bribe to be determined. The company would then be guaranteed procurement of the contract, with the bribe paid in stages according to the progress of the project payment.

As per Malay Mail, a raid conducted at the home of the project manager yielded several luxury watches, jewelry, and a sum of banknotes totalling almost RM 8.5m ($2m), around RM 1m ($236,322) of which the manager had tried to burn.

The report said investigators believe they have identified several companies that may have offered bribes, and will be calling on directors from these firms to assist in their inquiries.

SunCon has benefited from foreign interest in the Malaysian data center market. It secured two work orders valued at RM 1.16bn ($274.1 million) in May. According to The Edge Malaysia, SunCon has secured a total of RM 3.5bn ($827.1m) in new orders so far this year.

Sunway Group has business operations in property development, construction, tourism, and education.
