A pilot has been seriously injured after his aircraft struck a radio tower near Olene, Oregon.
Wireless Estimator reports that the pilot, who has been named as Gus Macy, suffered major injuries on Thursday morning after his aircraft hit a Basin Mediactive, LLC AM radio tower. The tower is one of a four-tower directional array that has stood on the site since 1981.
The aircraft hit the tower at 9:13 am, notes Aviation Safety, which states that the plane took off from Tulelake Municipal Airport, California. The plane was also set to land there.
Macy was pulled from the burning wreckage by a witness before emergency services crews arrived at the scene.
The tower is located near Hill Road and Crystal Springs Road off Highway 140.
"A witness who was nearby immediately responded to the crash site and was able to pull Macy away from the burning wreckage before emergency personnel arrived," noted the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office on social media. "Macy sustained major injuries and was transported to Sky Lakes Medical Center for treatment."
Local media publications have reported that Macy is a third-generation crop duster pilot. The plane he was flying was the Grunman G-164, a single-engine agricultural aircraft.
Macy was reported to be conscious and talking when first responders arrived, though had been burned.
The cause of the crash is not yet known, though an investigation is underway, said Klamath County Sheriff's Office.
