Spanish oil giant Repsol is reportedly set to expand into data centers.
Citing sources close to the initiative, Expansion reports petrochemical firm Repsol is to invest €4 billion ($4.2 billion) in data center development.
Data centers are reportedly planned near the northern Spanish city of Zaragoza.
Further details weren’t shared. However, reports surfaced late last year that Repsol was looking to build a 400MW data center at its 800MW Escatrón combined cycle plant, some 75km southwest of Zaragoza.
Repsol did not provide comment to the publication.
Founded in the 1980s but with roots dating back to the state-owned CAMPSA company in the 1920s, Repsol is Spain’s largest oil company. It has operations in more than 20 countries.
The company has a growing renewables arm, with some 3GW in operation across more than 25 sites in Europe and the Americas. It is targeting a portfolio of 10GW by 2027.
Repsol acquired the Escatrón plant in 2018 from Spanish electricity company Viesgo.
Zaragoza, in Spain’s Aragon region, is home to current and planned data center developments from Amazon, Microsoft, QTS, and Box2bit.
