Minnesota-based chipmaker SkyWater Technologies has completed its acquisition of Infineon’s 200mm semiconductor fab in Austin, Texas, known as Fab 25.

SkyWater will operate the fab as a foundry, increasing the available capacity for its foundational chips on nodes from 130nm to 65nm.

In an interview with EE Times, SkyWater SVP Ross Miller said that by taking over Fab 25, the company will be able to quadruple its total manufacturing capacity to about 400,000 wafers a year, with the acquisition also providing SkyWater with access to processing capabilities such as copper back-end of line (BEOL) for metal interconnects.

The planned purchase was first announced in February 2025, although the terms of the deal have not been disclosed. In addition to the fab takeover, the two companies have also entered into a “long-term supply agreement” that will allow Infineon to maintain a manufacturing footprint in the US. The US Department of Defense is also a customer, as the government looks to move away from relying on Asia-made chips.

Miller said SkyWater has also become a leading foundry for quantum hardware, with D-Wave and PsiQuantum, alongside “several others” he was unable to name, already working with the chipmaker on a number of projects.

“That’s just an example of how a different business model applied to this mature infrastructure really can be instrumental in driving state-of-the-art innovation,“ he said.
