Scala Data Centers has acquired a stake in two wind farms in Brazil.
The company this week announced what it said was the largest agreement for the supply of renewable energy in Latin America with Serena.
Set to come into effect in January 2025, Scala will offtake from the Assuruá 4 and Ventos da Bahia 3 Wind Complexes, both located in Bahia and with a total installed capacity of 393MW.
Scala will own a stake in these assets. Terms of the deal were not shared.
"The agreement with Scala Data Centers reinforces how Serena is prepared to offer energy and infrastructure for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, whether in Brazil or the US. We are the ideal partner for technology companies to exponentially increase their sustainable energy supply,” said Fabiana Pasquot Polido, director of structured operations for the Americas at Serena.
Luciano Fialho, SVP of corporate development at Scala Data Centers, added: “In a context where energy availability is a challenge in several countries around the world, especially with the increase in demand due to the processing of Artificial Intelligence loads, the partnership with Serena reinforces our unwavering commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment. All this while maintaining our carbon neutral operation.”
Founded in 2008, Serena has 2.8GW of installed wind, solar, and hydro capacity across Brazil and the US, with another 6.5GW in development.
Founded in 2020 after DigitalBridge acquired facilities from Brazilian IT firm UOL Diveo, Scala has invested around $1.6bn in hyperscale data centers across Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Colombia. The company expects its data center portfolio to reach 500MW over the next five years.
OData, a Brazilian operator owned by Aligned, last year took a minority stake in a wind farm owned by Omega Energia. The company invested in the 212MW Assuruá IV wind farm in Bahia state’s Xique-Xique municipality.
