California-based Rigetti Computing has announced the general cloud availability of its 36-qubit, multi-chip quantum computer, Cepheus-1-36Q.
Currently accessible to customers via Rigetti Quantum Cloud Services (QCS), the company says it will also soon be available on Microsoft Azure.
Comprising four chips, Rigetti says the system contains the largest number of chiplets integrated into a quantum computer and provides a 2x reduction in two-qubit gate error rate compared to its predecessor, the Ankaa-3 system, while also achieving a median two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.5 percent.
According to the company, Cepheus-1-36Q is the first multi-chip quantum computer to achieve this level of performance. In a statement, Rigetti said these technological improvements have facilitated its goal of introducing a 100+ qubit system by the end of 2025 with similar fidelity metrics.
“It’s our view that superconducting qubits are the leading modality for quantum computers due to their ability to scale, and their ability to achieve gate speeds more than 1,000 times faster than other modalities like ion traps and pure atoms,” said Rigetti CEO, Subodh Kulkarni.
“Rigetti’s superconducting qubits leverage technologies, like chiplets, that have been maturing in the semiconductor industry for decades, enabling Rigetti to use well-established methods to scale to higher performance and qubit counts.”
The news comes as Rigetti posted its Q2 2025 financial results, which saw the company post revenue of $1.8 million for the three-month period, against a net loss of $39.7m.
