Quantum Brilliance has opened a quantum diamond foundry in Melbourne, Australia.

It is the world’s first commercial facility dedicated to the production of quantum-grade synthetic diamonds at scale, the company said.

The foundry’s mission is to unlock the potential of diamond-based quantum technologies through the design and fabrication of diamond quantum devices, Quantum Brilliance said. Applications include mineral exploration, renewable-energy infrastructure, and artificial intelligence.

National Reconstruction Fund and Breakthrough Victoria invested in the foundry, which the company said will position both the state of Victoria and Australia more widely as a leader in diamond quantum technologies.

“Today is a milestone for Australia and for the global quantum community,” said Dr. Marcus Doherty, co-founder and chief scientific officer of Quantum Brilliance. “By opening the world’s first commercial Quantum Diamond Foundry, we are moving quantum out of the lab and into products that can be built, shipped, and used in everyday settings. This is about reliable devices at scale, created in Australia, serving customers worldwide.”

Rod Bristow, CEO of Breakthrough Victoria, added: “Opening the world’s first commercial quantum diamond foundry in Melbourne is a landmark achievement for Victoria’s innovation economy. This investment will accelerate quantum breakthroughs, create highly skilled local jobs, and position our state as a global leader in advanced technology and sovereign manufacturing.”

Founded in Australia in 2019, Quantum Brilliance was born out of research projects undertaken at the Australian National University. The company uses synthetic diamonds to power its quantum technology, having previously said that the optical and quantum properties of diamonds make them uniquely promising for quantum networking and quantum communications applications.

Quantum Brilliance has received funding from the Australian Capital Territory government and now operates in Canberra, Australia, and Stuttgart, Germany.

In September 2025, the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) installed a quantum computer in its data center in Tennessee that is powered by a diamond-based quantum accelerator cluster developed by Quantum Brilliance.
