Mitsubishi Electric’s ME Innovation Fund has invested in Japanese optical quantum computing startup OptQC.
The size of the investment has not been disclosed.
Spun out of the Furusawa Laboratory at the University of Tokyo, OptQC is developing an optical quantum computer using an architecture designed to limit the increase in system size as the number of qubits grows. The company has already delivered its first commercial system to a public research institution and has provided hardware modules to companies operating in the private sector.
In a statement, Mitsubishi said that following the investment, it expects to gain early insights into OptQC’s optical quantum computing hardware and related components, in addition to customers and market trends.
Mitsubishi “aims to lead the field of quantum computing and create new business opportunities by applying these insights to its quantum technologies, software implementation know-how and application development in industrial fields,” the statement added.
The investment from Mitsubishi comes a month after NTT announced it had invested in OptQC, expanding on a research collaboration effort launched by the two companies in 2025 which targets the development of a one million qubit fault-tolerant optical quantum computer by 2030.
