Orange Romania has signed a ten-year virtual Power Purchase Agreement (vPPA) with Engie Romania, that will cover 40GWh of Orange Romania's annual electricity requirements.

The energy will be delivered from one of Engie’s wind farms in Romania. Engie operates 211MW of renewable energy capacity across Romania, including three wind farms with an installed capacity of 178MW and five solar projects with a combined capacity of 33MW. The company aims to have 1GW of installed renewable capacity in the country by 2030.

“This long-term partnership will significantly contribute to our decarbonization goals, ensuring that a substantial part of our energy needs come from renewable sources,” said Julien Ducarroz, CEO of Orange Romania.

This is the second vPPA between the two companies, following a six-year vPPA signed in August 2023 for 30GWh of power per year from Engie’s solar assets in the region.

Commenting on the agreement, Nicolas Richard, CEO of Engie Romania, contended that Engie wants: "More and more companies to adopt this type of medium and long-term purchase contracts, especially in the current context of volatility, in which securing medium and long-term energy needs can help mitigate risks related to energy prices, while contributing, at the same time, to achieving sustainability objectives."

Orange has a net zero goal by 2040 and has prioritized procuring renewable energy through vPPAs as a central tenet of this goal.

In addition to the vPPAs signed with Engie, it has secured two vPPAs with Enery, signed in January 2024. Under the terms of the contracts, Enery has committed to supplying Orange with 70,000MWh of clean energy per year. The agreements also include a virtual cross-border PPA.

Orange Romania is one of the country's largest operators, with more than 11 million local customers.

Engie is one of the preeminent renewable energy suppliers for the data center and telco markets. Over the past 12 months, it has signed several PPAs in the European market.

In July, it signed five PPAs with Google, which will see it supply 118MW of wind power to the search giant operations in Belgium.

Before this, in February last year, it signed a 15-year PPA with telco Iliad to supply 25.6MW of energy from a solar farm in France starting in April 2025.

In the last year, Engie also signed PPAs in Texas and Malaysia.
