Ooredoo’s data center subsidiary, Syntys, has acquired two facilities in Qatar.
Ooredoo Group and Syntys announced this week that Syntys has acquired Q Data QFZ LLC, a Qatari data center firm with 5MW live and 7.5MW under development.
The deal sees Syntys take ownership of two Tier III‑certified, carrier‑neutral facilities within the Qatar Free Zones.
The seller is Doha Venture Capital, the venture capital subsidiary of Qatar Free Zones Authority. Terms of the deal were not shared.
Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo, group CEO, Ooredoo, said: "This acquisition directly aligns with Ooredoo Group's strategic focus on investing in critical digital infrastructure and enabling sovereign AI and cloud services across the region. By integrating Q Data's hyperscale facilities into Syntys, we reinforce Syntys' ability to serve the world's leading cloud and AI providers while delivering sustainable value for our shareholders."
Syntys (formerly Mena Digital Hub) was formed last year after Ooredoo carved out its data centers across MENA. Iron Mountain has invested in the business.
At the time of the carve-out, Ooredoo Group had 26 data centers in operation across Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Iraq, and Tunisia. Syntys hasn’t detailed its full portfolio. Syntys' total live IT capacity in Qatar is now 26MW.
"Q Data brings proven, revenue‑generating assets that meet the rigorous standards our clients demand," added Sunita Bottse, Syntys CEO. "By integrating these facilities into the Syntys platform, we expand our capacity in Qatar with internationally recognised, Tier III‑certified, carrier‑neutral infrastructure tailored to the needs of hyperscale and AI customers."
Bottse continued: "We're executing a disciplined plan to reach more than 120MW of installed capacity across MENA by 2030. This acquisition advances that strategy by integrating established, cash‑generating assets that strengthen our presence in a critical market."
Correction: An earlier version of this story said Q Data QFZ LLC is more widely known as Quantum Switch. Quantum Switch has reached out to DCD to say this is incorrect, with Quantum Switch leasing the sites from Q Data. We apologize for the error.
Quantum Switch noted it leases those buildings from Q Data and operates them as data centers for its hyperscale clients, and told DCD it will continue to do so. Ownership of the underlying real estate assets has transferred from Doha Venture Capital to Ooredoo/Syntys, with Quantum Switch's operations unchanged.
In Qatar, Quantum Switch lists two facilities according to its website: DOA-A currently offers 6MW across 40,000 sqm (430,556 sq ft), and DOA-B offers 4MW across 13,545 sqm (145,797 sq ft).
Founded in 2019 and based in the UK with backing from Doha Venture Capital, Quantum Switch is led by former DigiPlex VP of hyperscale, Tim Bawtree. The company also has developments in Saudi Arabia and two undisclosed sites in the Americas.
