Middle Eastern data center developer Otech (previously Oman Data Park) is to build a data center in Rwanda.

The company and Rwandan ISP Broadband Systems Corporation this week announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to co-invest in a new data center.

Full details haven’t been shared, but the AI-ready facility will be built in Rwanda to Tier III standards.

“This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to building smarter and more secure digital systems that will power innovation, data resilience, and future-ready technology solutions in Rwanda,” Broadband Systems Corporation said on LinkedIn.

Founded in 2010, Broadband Systems Corporation is an ISP based in the Rwandan capital, Kigali. It manages a nationwide fiber network, as well as radio and telecoms infrastructure.

In its own post, Otech said the deal supports the goals of Oman Vision 2040: “Together, we aim to accelerate regional digital transformation and foster AI-driven innovation across emerging markets.”

Oman Data Park was founded in 2012 as a joint venture between Omani telco Omantel and data center company 4Trust LLC. The firm rebranded to Otech earlier this year, with Omantel taking full ownership.

Otech operates Tier III-quality data centers in Muscat – across Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM), Wattaya, and Duqm – totaling more than 17,000 sq ft (1,580 sqm) of hosting space, with capacity for more than 250 racks.

In 2024, the firm entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Intro Technology to build a $450 million data center in Egypt within the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

Data Center Map lists three facilities in Rwanda, all around the capital, Kigali. Operators include Paix, local ISP TransAfrica Communications, and local IT service provider AOS. Pan-African telco MTN says it has facilities in Rwanda.

In 2022, Africa Data Centres said it was looking to build a 2MW facility in Kigali, aiming to launch in 2023. The status of that project is unclear.
