Meta-backed long-duration storage company Noon Energy has partnered with Sabanci Renewables to deploy up to 1GW of co-located storage and renewable capacity for the data center sector.
The companies said they will co-develop ultra-long-duration energy storage (ultra-LDES) projects by integrating Noon Energy’s reversible electrofuels battery systems with Sabanci’s renewable portfolio.
First commercial deployments of the solution are expected to commence as early as 2027.
The partners claim that the focus of the agreements is to co-develop “100 percent clean, firm power projects which pair Sabanci Renewables’ clean generation portfolio with Noon Energy’s ultra-LDES storage to enable baseload renewable energy.”
"Partnering with an established and forward-thinking company like Sabanci Renewables marks a critical step in accelerating the path to commercialization for our ultra-LDES technology," said Chris Graves, Noon Energy CEO. "In this cooperation, we will develop the commercial, technical, and operational frameworks to unlock a 100 percent reliable and renewable grid for cents per kWh using multi-day energy storage.”
The projects will be structured as Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) or capacity offtake agreements for systems up to 1GW (100GWh).
Murat Oguz Arcan, chief growth officer of Sabanci Renewables and managing director of Sabanci Climate Ventures, added: “By bridging Noon Energy’s ultra-long-duration energy storage technology with Sabanci Renewables’ renewable energy expertise, we aim to contribute to the development of the clean, reliable, and scalable energy infrastructure that the AI economy will require."
Noon’s energy storage solution is a reversible Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system that stores energy as chemical fuel and converts it back to electricity. Unlike other batteries on the market, the system combines a battery with a fuel cell and a chemical storage system, which the company contends allows for much longer energy storage duration. Noon claims that its system is designed for 100+ hours of storage, with some pilot systems demonstrating more than 200 hours.
The company signed a long-term contract with Meta in April, with the hyperscaler reserving up to 1GW/100GWh of energy storage capacity. As part of the agreement, Noon will supply Meta access to a 25MW/2.5GWh project, which is scheduled for completion in 2028. Following the initial project, Noon will commence the delivery of systems under the 1GW supply contract.
Sabanci Renewables is a US-based subsidiary of Türkiye’s (Turkey) Sabanci Holding. It was established in 2022. The company has also partnered with Meta on a 220MW solar PPA in Texas, signed in June.
