Meta has signed a deal with US-based solid-oxide long-duration energy storage (LDES) firm Noon Energy to reserve up to 1GW/100GWh of energy storage capacity.

As part of the agreement, Noon will supply Meta access to a 25MW/2.5GWh project, which is scheduled for completion in 2028. Following the initial project, Noon will commence the delivery of systems under the 1GW supply contract.

According to Meta, the agreement aligns directly with its goal of supporting AI infrastructure buildout, with Noon’s long-duration system expected to complement Meta’s renewable portfolio.

Noon’s energy storage solution is a reversible Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system that stores energy as chemical fuel and converts it back to electricity. Unlike other batteries on the market, the system combines a battery with a fuel cell and a chemical storage system, which the company contends allows for much longer energy storage duration. Noon claims that its system is designed for 100+ hours of storage, with some of its pilot systems demonstrating upwards of 200 hours. At present, the company is still in the pilot stage, with the Meta deployment likely to be its first commercial project.

The company has said it intends to develop the initial project in the near term.

The deal is one of Meta’s first in the energy storage space and its first in the LDES market. Last year, the company signed two Energy Storage Agreements (ESA) with NextEra Energy in New Mexico as part of a larger 2.5GW deal.

Several of the other hyperscalers have also backed LDES firms. Most notably Google, which inked its first deal in the space last year with CO2 battery developer Energy Dome.
