Nokia has expanded its existing 5G partnership with Taiwan Mobile as part of plans to support the carrier's AI push.

This will see network vendor Nokia support the modernization of Taiwan Mobile's 5G network to better support the demands of AI.

As part of this agreement, Nokia will provide its latest AirScale portfolio, including next-gen baseband and radio solutions, and advanced software capabilities to enhance Taiwan Mobile’s existing network infrastructure and enable new 5G services and monetization opportunities

Nokia, of course, has its own ambitions to embed AI within its Radio Access Network (AI RAN) across mobile networks. The company is working extensively with GPU giant Nvidia to build automated networks to support the increasing AI traffic.

"We are extending our long-standing partnership with Taiwan Mobile, helping accelerate its journey toward AI-native networks," noted Mark Atkinson, head of RAN at Nokia.

"Our advanced radio and baseband solutions and AI-driven software deliver intelligent automation, enhanced performance and improved energy efficiency, setting the foundation for 5G-Advanced and beyond. The future-ready network enables Taiwan Mobile to deliver increasing volumes of AI traffic, provide new types of services, and progress toward its sustainability targets."

According to Nokia, the vendor's partnership with Taiwan Mobile will see the company deploy AI across the carrier's network. This includes the deployment of AI-powered software that enables real-time automation and predictive analytics, which is tipped to bolster operational efficiency and enable closed-loop network assurance.

Beyond this, the agreement includes the predictive hardware analytics service and Nokia's self-organizing networks solution, MantaRay SON, which uses AI algorithms to automate operations and enhance performance.

Nokia added that its baseband and radios will be able to increase network capacity and uplink performance to support the demands of new traffic profiles generated by AI applications.

Other features include improved energy management to support traffic-aware optimization and improved network resilience through AI-enabled self-healing and traffic steering.

Founded in 1997, Taiwan Mobile has more than 10 million mobile subscribers and around 32 percent market share.
