Avangrid and Portland General Electric (PGE) have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with QTS and Meta for energy from a 120MW solar energy project under construction in Morrow County, Oregon.
The Tower Solar project will deliver energy to the PGE grid through the Green Future Impact (GFI) program, a voluntary initiative where large commercial, industrial, and municipal customers can support the development of new renewable energy facilities.
Companies that enroll in the program acquire energy through a bundled renewable energy product and receive Renewable Energy Certificates associated with the power generated from the facility.
“The GFI program allows PGE to partner with our largest customers like QTS to meet their ambitious sustainability goals through local clean energy,” said Brett Greene, PGE senior director of clean energy origination and structuring.
Under the GFI, QTS will develop a data center campus to support Meta’s operations in Oregon. The Tower Solar project will supply energy directly to the project, which is expected to reach commercial operations in 2026.
QTS currently has three data centers in Oregon that are in operation or under development. These include the 24MW Hillsboro 1 campus, the 140+MW Hillsboro 2 campus, and the planned Hillsboro 3 campus.
DCD contacted QTS to confirm what data center campus is linked to the PPA.
“This innovative project highlights QTS's commitment to procuring sustainable energy solutions that help alleviate data center power generation needs and support our customers’ goals,” said Tag Greason, QTS's chief growth officer.
Meta has a significant footprint in Oregon. Across the company's 16 facilities (excluding leased), its Meta campus in Prineville, Oregon, is its biggest electricity consumer, at 1,375,321MWh.
Meta has signed several clean energy agreements to support its operations in 2024. Last month, it signed a solar PPA with rPlus Energies for 125MW of energy from the Pleasant Valley Solar 2 project in Kuna, Idaho.
At the beginning of the month, it signed an agreement with Engie North America to procure 260MW of energy from its Sypert Branch solar project in Milam County, Texas.
Meta has also signed PPAs in Indiana, Illinois, Arkansas, and Louisiana this year for more than 1.2GW of contracted power.
