A local opposition group has launched a petition opposing a proposed data center in Indiana.

The Coalition to Protect Decatur County Against AI Data Center has launched a Change.org petition against the project, first proposed late last year in Greenburg.

“We, the people of Decatur County, are opposed to having this AI Data Center being built in our backyards,” the petition notes. “We were not properly informed of the possibility of this Hyperscale data center coming to our community. There has been zero transparency to the citizens of Decatur County regarding the risks of this being built in our community.”

So far, the petition has garnered more than 950 signatures.

Greenburg, the seat of Decatur County, is located some 50 miles (80.4km) southeast of Indiana and 60 miles (96.5km) west of Cincinnati.

In December, Greensburg City Council unanimously approved a ten-year, 60 percent real property tax abatement for Jumping Bison LLC, which is looking to build a data center on a 550-acre site in the Business Enterprise Park located along I-74 and opposite Honda’s Indiana Auto Plant.

Which developer or operator is behind Jumping Bison is unclear, though the county has said it is a US-based company. The firm reportedly aims to invest $800 million across two phases. Further details about the development haven’t been shared.
