Data center developer Iren has delivered its first building to Microsoft at its campus in Childress, Texas.

The cryptominer-turned-neocloud has announced that Horizon 1 has been delivered to and accepted by Microsoft.

Horizon 1 is the first of four 50MW (IT load) direct-to-chip liquid-cooled buildings scheduled for delivery to Microsoft at the Childress campus this year.

Microsoft signed a five-year, $9.7bn cloud services contract with Iren in November 2025.

At full build-out, Childress is set to offer 750MW across 576 acres. The site was previously used to host cryptomining gear.

Formerly known as Iris Energy, Iren is in the midst of a pivot away from cryptomining towards its AI cloud business. While it is still mining Bitcoin, the firm is winding down its mining operations and diverting cash flow to its AI business.

The company has said it is targeting a broader expansion to 480MW of gross AI Cloud capacity in 2026 and 1.2GW (gross) in 2027.

Iren has crypto and AI sites located across Canada and the US. Currently, it has some 23,000 GPUs in its fleet, and in October said that contracts had been secured for around 11,000 of them.

Founded in 2019, the company has data center sites live and in development across Texas (Childress, Sweetwater), Oklahoma (Kiowa), and British Columbia in Canada (Mackenzie, Prince George, and Canal Flats). It is also targeting a large project in South Australia, and recently acquired Spanish data center developer Nostrum.
