European data center firm KevlinX is aiming to expand into Italy.

The company announced plans for a new data center in Genoa earlier this month.

Further details of the development haven’t been shared.

“Genoa is a city with everything it takes to become a major digital infrastructure hub, Mediterranean connectivity, access to subsea cables, and a strategic position linking Europe, Africa, and Asia. We're proud to be investing in this region and helping put Liguria on the map as a center for technological leadership in Southern Europe,” Roy Maxwell, KevlinX director, said on LinkedIn.

“This campus is designed to meet the rapidly growing demand for sovereign AI compute supporting model training, inference, HPC workloads, and the broader AI gigafactory ecosystem. It's exactly the kind of infrastructure Europe needs right now.”

KevlinX, backed by Macquarie Capital, recently completed its debut data center, a 32MW facility in Brussels, Belgium. The company broke ground on the site in 2023.

A port city in the north-west of the country, Genoa is the sixth-largest city in Italy and the capital of the Liguria region.

The area has a modest data center market – Data Center Map lists just six facilities – but is one of Italy’s main cable landing zones, with eight current and planned subsea cables making landfall around Genoa. Operators in the area include Equinix, Sparkle, Exa, and Retelit.
