The Government of Maharashtra in western India has signed a Letter of Intent with AirTrunk for a data center deal worth 200 billion rupees ($21bn).
The letter pertains to a land allotment at the Raigad Pen Growth Centre, a 1,217-acre smart city located in Pen Taluka, in the state’s Raigad district.
A Letter of Intent, similar to a Memorandum of Understanding, is a preliminary agreement signed between parties that is non-binding.
The data center will provide 3GW of IT capacity at completion, according to a post by Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
Founded in 2018, AirTrunk was acquired by Blackstone and CPPIB for US$16.1bn in 2024 in what was the largest-ever deal in the space at the time.
The company entered India earlier this year after acquiring Blackstone's Lumina CloudInfra platform.
AirTrunk has data centers either operating or under development in Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
Most of Maharashtra’s data centers are located in Mumbai, the state’s largest city and home to one of India’s largest data center clusters.
Beyond India, AirTrunk has data center campuses in operation and development in Sydney (x3) and Melbourne (x2) in Australia, as well as Singapore; Hong Kong; Johor, Malaysia; Tokyo (x2), and Osaka (x2), Japan.
