Italian Telco TIM has signed a new long-term energy with ERG to provide it with wind energy across the country.
ERG, through its ERG Power Generation, has signed a signed a 10-year corporate power purchase agreement to supply 3.4 Terawatt hours of green energy.
The deal, starting next year, will see ERG supply TIM with power from its wind farms, including sites in Lacedonia Monteverde and Avigliano. As a result, around 20 percent of TIM’s total energy will come from renewable sources.
“We are proud of this agreement because it allows us to achieve not only strategic ESG objectives for the company but also for the community,” said TIM CEO, Luigi Gubitosi.
“On the one hand, in fact, we diversify the sources of energy supply, stabilize costs and reaffirm the company's strong commitment to the use of renewable energy in the medium to long term. On the other hand, we confirm TIM's commitment to support the national plan for the energy transition: with this operation, in fact, we will contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and to generate benefits for the environment.”
A number of telcos in Europe are making concerted efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. Orange has signed a number of deals to source power from renewable sources as part of a goal to have 50 percent renewable energies in its electricity mix by 2025. BT recently signed a deal with Total to source half of its UK energy requirements from renewable sources. Vodafone had committed to net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, while Telefonica is targeting 2030.
