RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. has been awarded a contract to establish a data center in Addis Ababa for Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As reported by The Globe and Mail, the data center is expected to be completed within a year, and RailTel will continue to provide operation and maintenance support for three years once operational.

The project is part of India's support of Ethiopia's Digital Ethiopia Strategy, with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs awarding the contract. It will also support RailTel's efforts to expand outside of India.

According to The Globe and Mail, the data center will be housed within the existing building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa. Details about its size and IT capacity have not been shared.

It has an approximate value of Rs 19.84 crore ($2.2 million), and the contract is set to be completed by the end of 2029.

RailTel was formed in 2000 with the aim of modernizing India’s communication infrastructure. The company began rolling out Edge data centers across India in August 2024, and, in November 2025, inaugurated a 10MW facility in Noida, India.

Despite being an Indian company, RailTel is seeking to expand internationally, specifically looking at opportunities in the Middle East, Africa, the Caribbean, South America, South-East Asia, and Australia.
