HPE has been awarded a $931 million data center modernization contract by the US Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).

Under the contract, HPE will deploy a distributed hybrid multi-cloud solution with a 10-year period of performance.

The modernization will see DISA utilizing the HPE GreenLake platform for a private cloud, HPE's Edge-to-cloud offering that sees hardware deployed within the end user's data center.

The offering will be on-premises and air-gapped.

The solution is hoped to help simplify the management of DISA's IT resources with one unified platform, consolidating DISA's J9 Hosting and Compute.

The contract follows the completion of a prototype provided for DISA by HPE, which began in April 2024. The prototype was for a Distributed Hybrid Multi-Cloud (DHMC) solution that would enable DISA to manage its IT infrastructure and resources across public and private clouds through one hybrid, multi-cloud platform.

In May 2024, DISA set out its five-year strategy in which it said it aimed to "simplify the network globally with large-scale adoption of command IT environments."

According to the DISA Next Strategy document, in 1992, the DoD and DISA had 194 data centers and 122 associated networks. This was then consolidated down to 16.

In May 2023, DISA announced that it would launch a private classified cloud in Hawaii, Stratus.

HPE GreenLake counts SparkNZ, Barclays Bank, CMC Markets, Toyo Tire, and FC Barcelona among its customers. It added an HPC and AI offering in 2023.
